Filósofo, intelectual y poeta ruso. Estudió en Berlín y pasó gran parte de su vida en el extranjero, especialmente en Italia, donde se convirtió al catolicismo. Su primer volumen de poesía lírica,
Pilot Stars [Estrellas piloto] (1903), lo erigió de inmediato como una de las figuras clave del movimiento
simbolista ruso, posición que se vio fortalecida por sus obras posteriores, entre las que se incluye
Cor Ardens [Corazón ardiente] (1911). También fue autor de dramas poéticos, ensayos, textos críticos y traducciones.
